Well, go trackside east of Barstow for a few hours and you'll find plenty of so-called 'loose car' railroading. They're called manifest or yard make-up trains, often looking a lot like the mixed freight of tradition. Further: The UP runs their massive Q-RVWC just about every day from Roseville to West Colton, BNSF runs plenty of manifest trains in California, and every home terminal in California has a Brakeman's Extra Board (except Bikersfield) that augments a lot of on-line work station switching, roadswitchers and locals. It's not dead yet.
