Unfortunately "politicians being political" is how botched projects like the current iteration of what was initially supposed to be a subway on 3rd and Kearny came into being. Rose Pak turns out to be carry more weight than an office full of engineers. After observing BART in action for 4 decades I'd say pretty much every BART "real story" is nothing but a cover story.
