Summary from Lewiston Morning Tribune Story Wed. Jan 26, 2011.
Mike Williams, owner of the BG&CM railroad says the line between Spalding and Grangeville "is of no use" and is considering options for either selling the property to nearby farms or donating the line for trail use. Mr. Williams stated he has experience in converting rail lines to trails and has "converted thousands of miles of track" to trails all over the United States. Mr. Williams owes over $200,000 in back property taxes to the three north Idaho counties the line passes through and has already lifted track between Ferdinand, ID and Grangeville, ID and would consider donating the line to a trail group formed in October if they would pay off the back taxes. In the telephone interview with the paper, Mr. Williams assured people that he would eventually pay the back taxes if the trail deal fell through. Mr. Williams said he is sensitive to lineside farmers who oppose the trail use and trail conversion is not a done deal.
