I'll admit to being very opinionated concerning the GCR. I rode one of the Christmas trips in '89 with a friend and wanted to work for them right then & there. I finally did after I retired and wasn't disappointed...they were a very professional outfit and I still stay in contact with one of the guys that I worked nites with. Have never been around locomotives that were so steamtight.
If you have any desire to experience steam @ 40 mph, suggest you try to ride the cited trips.
Yes, it is also true that you cannot get photo after photo on the way to the Canyon or back, but each direction can get you two quality locations if you plan ahead. Roads are not that bad, some are good for 50 mph, but you keep alert for livestock and potholes.
When 4960 goes down, hopefully 29 will still be available. She is an unsung puller and is good for nearly as much tonnage as her bigger cousin.
