It was not I that brought up the national debt and whether this country can afford to invest in infrastructure. I think the discussion about infrastructure is relevant in a railroad forum.

Well, you don't have to, because I didn't express that correctly. My apologies. Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid are larger than Defense in the 2010 Federal budget. But then there are emergency war appropriations. There is also a whole 'nother discussion whether Social Security and Medicare ought to count, as they are essentially insurance programs.
But the US military spending *is* larger than the rest of the world combined. Not that the GIs see much of that - it goes to contractors (often no-bid) and the weapons industry. I just think Uncle Sam could spend his moneys a little wiser.
