Yeah, I should have clarified that HSR itself is not the problem, its the administration/politics of it. The real problem is the general cluelessness of politicians. These are the same people who seriously considered and actually did studies on whether SP's old ROW over Altamont could be used as the path into the Bay Area. The line was built in the late 1860s and is curvy as can be. I know nothing about high speed rail but I do know the answer to that question should have been "No. Next plan option please...". I am unclear why Europe has been so successful with it, but it just seems hopeless here. Oh well; makes for good conversation at least.
