Leland and Jane Stanford lived in the mansion in Sacramento -- recently restored and now on Jerry Brown's list -- when he was elected California governor in 1861, just after founding the Central Pacific with Huntington, Hopkins and Crocker. As governor, he boosted the railroad's fortunes tremendously.
