The Empire Builder (when it is running all the way through) ran with sleepers and coaches on both ends. One of the coaches was a coach baggage. Westbound at Spokane the train is split half including the diner going to Seattle, the other half including the lounge going to Portland.

I think sleepers on the head-end or rear-end is more due to switching, operations and maintenance reasons than anything else.
