I 100% agree with your comments. I personally am interested in the building of the transcontinental RR, any SP history, and many other "ancient" things. And by no means do I think that if you "did not see it, you don't care". My feeling was more a general observation that for many of us, we have an initial attraction to trains and a subsequent longing for what we once saw but can no longer see. From that, it is easy to see why this naturally changes with each generation.
Really, all I meant was that: a) railfans are not disappearing at all and b) many are not fascinated by steam, glamorous passenger trains, or many other things one assumes railfans should be interested in and that therefore, publications/museums should consider this in their future decisions.
Oh, I guess c) was me getting a shot in at a magazine I think has lost its way because of a few who seem obsessed with Amtrak/high speed rail. I guess that one could and should have been left out, but I could not resist...
