One of the reasons that the younger set are not interested in the "old stuff" is the fact that they have had no real introduction to it. No basics of the where and why, and no way to find out because many groups, like the NRHS, assume every one should know about it all and all to many people at national conventions become irritated when newbies ask questions. I constantly encounter this at hobby shops and swap meets, someone, of any age starts to ask questions about something and they are treated like idiots by the long term hobby members. The "go with what you know" comes from what people are able to learn and experience for themselves, if you want to help people get interested in other older aspects of the hobby, people have to be willing to talk to newbies without making them feel like idiots for asking questions. (It can be harder than you think, but if there is really interest in preserving this hobby---and it's numbers are in decline---it will have to be done.)
