But "horrible areas" can come back, and maybe this can be a part of that progress. The adjacent housing (put up by the developer that now owns the station property) seems pretty nice.
Jack London Square was, at one time, simply awful. But the City of Oakland and the Port of Oakland (separate entities) did a lot of work, and it is now quite a mixed-use development, being both a desirable residential and office area, and popular restaurant destination. (Unfortunately, the new Amtrak station is at one end, and the ferry terminal (to San Francisco) is at the other, missing a great inter-modal opportunity, IMHO.) Same (to a lesser degree) for the downtown/City Center area.
Maybe they can (eventually) work the same magic arouind the old depot!
