I was at the depot when the earthquake occurred (on train #710, which would have left a few minutes later). A few days later, the station facilities moved into the then-vacant SP office building next door--no trailers were ever used there (except for the one brought in by the vendor to serve as a newsstand). Amtrak T&E employees, however, continued to use the depot as a crew base for several years until the Jack London depot opened. After the Emeryville station opened (which was previous to Jack London) and trains no longer stopped at 16th Street, T&E employees still went on duty there, and were taxied to either the coachyard or Emeryville to pick up their trains. I have always felt that the earthquake damage was overstated (the building has a steel frame) in order to facilitate moving to a better location.
