Good or bad idea?
Likely as not, the cost of Amtrak management arguing the pros and cons of this sort of thing, or spending any time at all fussing about it; would exceed the cost of doing it!
Setting up an exhibit with stuff the gov't already owns, using marketing people already in Amtrak's employ; surely will beat the procurement costs of a gov't agency trying to buy more light bulbs or something - and that doesn't even count the actual price of the bulbs themselves!
Besides, how many cars can you rehab for the cost of a few hours of marketing department labor. While on the other hand, what would be the cost of not making nice-nice with the politicians that butter your bread? Or the voters and taxpayers that butter the politicians' bread? Or even your own customers for that matter?
Seems to me, that cost would be even fewer cars rehabbed!
Now if we could just get them (Amtrak management and various politicians) to spend some time trying to bring down the really off-the-wall price of things that really matter; like trackage, passenger cars, locomotives, etc, which are especially high when purchased by any gov't agency. . . . .
Now that time and effort would be really well spent!
But there I go again with the idealistic thoughts. At 63, you'd think I would have learned better by now! Maybe if they just made nice-nice enough, more politicians would listen and be persuaded. Oh darn - there I go again. . . . .
Nuts!
