I noticed several times in that era (just before/after Amtrak started) passenger trainmen who had no uniform. I assumed they were extra board or others who rarely worked passenger. Considering how few trains there were in various locales, it seemed likely that there were those who had never been issued a uniform and sometimes found themselves working passenger an odd time or two. I rode #6 to Chicago in 1975, and on one UP crew district across Wyoming neither the conductor nor flagman had a uniform.
