We understand that the SP sold the car around 1960 and that Willis Kyle purchased it sometime around 1960 or 1968 depending on which source you believe. One part of the confusion is that Kyle owned the railroads that used it and Kyle may have purchased it himself in 1960, then did a business transfer of it to the YW in 1968. I don't know that it was used much or even stayed on the YW. It was placed into storage at some point in the 1980s or early 1990s. It was probably not used for public excursions until around 1994 when it was used on the SJVR for dozen or so private excursions on occasion.
It was sold to the last owner around 2004, who intended to move it to the Niles Canyon and renamed it Niles. This is NOT the other business car that was used by the Niles Canyon and we don't believe it was actually used for excursions.
As far as numbering and names, this is what I have so far, if it helps anyone track any info down. And I'm not 100% on how accurate this is and I'm sure there are large gaps not accounted for. However, as far as the car's name, it "appears" to have retained Santa Rosa most of it's life.
El Paso & Southwestern Railroad No. 500, Santa Rosa. 1917 (or 1919) through 1920 (or 1924)
Southern Pacific No. 500, Santa Rosa 1920s through 1937
Southern Pacific No. 128, Santa Rosa 1937 through 1960
Kyle Railways No. 128, Santa Rosa 1960 through 1968 (not sure)
Yreka Western No. 68, Santa Rosa, 1968 through 1980s?
Kyle Railways No. 13, Santa Rosa, 1990s through 2003
Private owner (RPCX) No. 415, renamed Niles, 2004 through 2011
That's what I've been able to gather so far, but we're looking for any corrections, any info at all throughout it's life, but especially while on the SP. Any information or photos anyone can share, will be posted on the OPR website, if permission given and with all credit given.
