John Bergman's "History of the Sunset Railway" is available as a used book at The Original Whistle Stop in Pasadena (they always seem to have copies; go to their website).

This book, like the other books written by the author, is best purchased for its photographs.
There are many historical errors in it (for example, regarding the section on the SP's
McKittrick branch, the track was not "extended" from Asphalto to McKittrick in 1901. The track went to the site of McKittrick from the beginning. What happened is that the Asphalto and McKittrick station names were switched in 1897).
