I worked there is 2005 as a temp engineer.

They were using the "north" end of the old Santa Fe yard, with the yard office being in an industrial warehouse unit right next to the yard. There were a few short tracks at that end, and sometimes you had to get the main for switching headroom not to mention dodging stuff coming in and out of the yard. They mainly used the SP yard because it was bigger, but there was a window where UP had a remote job that it couldn't be used.

The real fun was transferring cars back and forth. Transfer runs would work between the yards, usually using the old ATSF branch between their Bakersfield yard and Oil Jct, which meant a backup move for part of the trip. Nothing like shoving 60 cars from Oil Jct. to the SP yard. We did use the ATSF main from Kern Jct. to the ATSF yard a couple times, but this was not the usual pattern.

When I was there, SJVR was in their usual summer meltdown. In reality, there were cars all over the place with almost every track jammed full. It wasn't unusual to do yard switching at a junction or a siding, only to not be able to get out on the main to move it anywhere. It was also fun when BNSF wouldn't take any cars unless SJVR would pull a track first - and with the railroad plugged there was nowhere for anything to move.
