Raton Pass is 7800 or so, and Flagstaff is around 7000 so I'm not sure you get too much relief by taking the Chief -- although it too is a gorgeous ride, well worth the extra time if you wanted to go west on one train and return on another.

Were I doing the trip with time no abject, it's be Zepyhr (CHI/SAC), Starlight (SAC/LAX) with o'night at LAX (I stay at Metro Plaza), and Chief LAX/CHI.
