How so? Fact is that I haven't taken a camera to the tracks in years, and still I say "well done to the photographer". I prefer to just watch the trains, or study the installed trackside technology. I especially enjoyed sharing the "hunt" for tracks and trains (no camera) with my wife and children (something you shouldn't do with a certain few so-called "rail-fans" around - so I avoided the unpleasant ones like the plague).
But Marty did take a camera to wayside, and the result was great. And the joy he felt while learning, was also great to see. So what, that I am no photographer. I am no artist either; but I can appreciate both. I also appreciate the technology of railroading, as well as the trains themselves. But best of all, I can appreciate the good feeling and happiness others get at their own accomplishments. That is great! I'm glad he shared. What I find unfortunate is small minded and silly accusations of egotism when someone does share. How petty - can't we just let the joy of such accomplishment be contagious.
> Being a railfan has nothing to do with art or photography because they are separate interests.
However, they can and usually do overlap. Every photographer I have ever known mostly photographs things they have interest in, such as trains, or scenery, or tall buildings, or animals in the wild, or people in their pathos, or whatever. Few just take pictures of cameras, their only interest being photography. Moreover, those that just watch, rarely watch or hunt for things they have no interest in. Almost everything we do, tickles a whole set of interests - not just one.
So the point you missed, was that there is no need for sarcasm.
And if like me, you refuse to be labeled;
then you will never have to earn the label "Rail Fan" anyway!
Besides, in my profession (railroad signal engineer), that would've been a dubious label anyway! -- but I digress. . . . .
