As a semi-retired civil engineer(I am hoping that ILDOT will fund highway reconstruction projects so I can go back to work!), I now and again read want-ads for people in my field. Pre-hire drug tests now seem to be part and parcel of the hiring process for white collar individuals.
As a side note: back in the mid/late 70's I interviewed (at my expense to travel across 1/3 of the country) for a position as an engineering intern with the BN, out of the Division Engineer headquarters at Aurora, IL. Part of the hiring process required a "complete" physical exam with the company MD at the headquarters on Jackson Blvd, in Chicago, IL.
I "failed" the exam. I forget why I failed, except that I know it wasn't drug related. If I remember correctly, it had to do with allergies, however, what I do remember after the exam is the thought that the hiring process was based on recommendations from the Division Engineer to the Doctor (ie "fail" this guy).
