It actually is very simple. All the trolley poles I have ever seen anywhere are spring loaded. The springs are on the base of the pole at the car's roof and hold the trolley wheel or carbon slider against the wire. On the roof near the end of the car is a simple hook, an inverted J. The springs hold the pole up into the hook. There is a rope connected near the end of the pole and usually to a retractor (spring loaded like a window shade) on the end of the car which winds up the rope. To put up the pole you pull the rope down and over to unhook the pole then let the pole go up the the wire. To "pull" the pole, you do the opposite.
If you look at the two pictures in my two posts you can see all this hardware (except the springs) on both cars. Now pantographs are a whole other animal.
