Jimmy Carter was not "virulently anti-Amtrak." That description would apply to Ronald Reagan who proposed Zero budgets for Amtrak as Romney proposes to do. Although the Carter Administration is associated with the loss of some really nice trains such as the North Coast Hiawatha, Carter never proposed zero budgets for Amtrak. On the contrary, the Northeast Corridor Improvement Program was begun under, new locomotives and rolling stock was purchased and new trains were added such as the Desert Wind and Pioneer.
Yes, there WERE pro-Amtrak Republicans. However, at the national level, most of them have been purged from the ranks by the Tea Party.
