This stretch was a test case, the location where the SP perfected its process for replacing pile trestles with a minimum of disruption to service.

>Regarding the WP -- The Western Pacific had a bridge contract with the SP in that we 'bridged' their cars from Shinn (Fremont) to San Franscisco. As far as I known, the WP never operated over the Bridge. The bridge movement ended in the mid '80's when the UP closed down the SF operations and gave what business was left to SP.

Bridging started after the Las Plumas was retired. The WP also had a R/W projected from SJ to SF. I've seen it on a map or two, but I don't know whether they owned it, how much of it was ever purchased, or if it was just a pipe dream.
