According to an article about it in the SP Bulletin after the work was done circa 1970 (maybe a little earlier than that), the section that was replaced on the extreme west end had deteriorated, thus the need to replace it. Doing it "in place" with pre-cast concrete sections was said to be the most cost- and time-effective method. Maybe John Lynch can speak to this.
