NP Preserved steam locos

It has always irritated me that the NP didn't save ANY of their modern steam power from the ranks of their fine 4-8-4's and the beautiful 4-6-6-4 "Challengers", or even any of the W-3 mikados, a fine loco and the backbone of NP's freight power for many years.
Certainly 2626 should have been saved!
Of the major component railroads that constitute today's BNSF, only the NP did not save any "Northerns". Consider: GN - 1, SP&S - 1 the operational #700, CB&Q - 4, Frisco - 4, ATSF - 9 including operational #3751. To be sure, NP was generous about preserving many smaller steam locos, including 4-6-2's, 4-6-0's, 2-8-0's and 0-6-0's, but nothing large, or modern.
A little known "lost opportunity" happened with A-4 2676. Retired late, 10/1958, it was held for use as a stationary boiler at Superior Wisconsin. When Lou Menk became NP President about 1966 he "discovered" 2676 in the Superior roundhouse and ordered it scrapped IMMEDIATELY!
