Also, is a new railroad up the Mad River any different than the old railroad up the Eel River?? It's same "blue gooo" geology and tunnels will be necessary. You can build anything if you throw enough money at it.
Tom's point is well taken. If the thinkers and money baggers would just get behind this tourist train/museum proposal it would do wonders for the local economy. There were good reasons why no railroad was ever built up the Van Duzen or Mad Rivers. Although SP did go so far as to survey and acquire ROW between Trinidad and Klamath in hopes of making a coastal route through Crescent City to Grants Pass. The Natron Cutoff and the Depression axed the idea by 1933. Many title searches on land in the Orick area make references to Southern Pacific ROW. A surveyors map of this north-south SP proposal does exist.
