Scott,
It is my understanding that this car purchase by Caltrans will primarily add more cars to existing SRO train capacity (longer train sets), while creating enough "spares" to allow the current equipment to be released for major rehabs, maintenance, and upgrades.
There are plans to add more service in the LOSSAN corridor by adding additional frequencies like the proposed AM peak train to Santa Barbara, for which there is not now enough of a reserve of available equipment. This purchase would also allow for enough added train sets for some increased frequencies, and for the proposed Daylight service LA-SFO via the Coast.
It is my understanding that Illinois and Michigan are proposing additional service frequencies on the lines being upgraded to Saint Louis and Detroit.
So why does this thread just seem to drive some of these train hating trolls into fits? We are actually buying something real, made here in America, putting Americans to work, that we promised the voters who voted for these funds, to actually improve our travel options as was promised, for our already full trains, to relieve congestion on our most congested freeway corridors... and, ain't that just an awful outcome?
