I will concur regarding driving Cabbage Hill on Interstate 84 in the winter. Although it is " officially " 6 miles of 6% Eastbound ( uphill side ), my butt and a screaming engine tells me it is closer to 8%. ( BTW, there is supposed to be a limit of 6% on any Interstate Highway grade. ) And as nasty as the uphill side is, at least you can stop.( Hopefully you won't slide down to the inside of the curve when you do get stopped. ) The Westbound side is much worse, with many sharp curves posted for 25 or 30 MPH for trucks. The few times I've driven Cabbage I kept singing the old trucker's song " A Tombstone Every Mile. "
The fun doesn't stop there, as more thrills await the motorist in Ladd Cyn.,either side of Durkee, and the Farewell Bend area. Lotsa ice here in the winter. If you're not sure how to drive it, just wait and follow a truck from Idaho. If they're going slow it's for a reason !!! I'll stay local in Puget Sound thank you very much !!!
I drove Grapevine regularly for 6 years; its' danger factor is over - rated by the Southern " Chicken Haulers " who never see a hill steeper than an on - ramp. I always considerd Tecate Divide Eastbound on Interstate 8, with its' 9 miles of 6% downhill into El Centro, to be much worse than Grapevine. I never drove Donner or Dunsmuir in a big truck, so I can't speak for them.
