One thing that David Vartanoff is correct about is that sales of cars to young (20s, early 30s) people is at an all-time low. This is both due to economic conditions, but also a rejection by many younger people of an automobile-oriented lifestyle.
Thus the Tea Party politicians and their supporters who oppose federal, state & local investments in bicycle & pedestrian facilities, local public transportation and intercity buses and trains are ultimately advocating policies detrimental to a significant portion of the public.
I'm also glad that Severe Duty raises the question of exporting oil. Many claim that restrictions on oil drilling have led to increased price of gasoline, but others point out that the price of petroleum is set in the global market. Accordingly, it makes little difference in the overall price of gasoline how much drilling in the US occurs. The fact that domestically produced oil is exported is both strange to me, but all supports those who say that the price of oil is determined by worldwide demand.
To those who want to bash environmentalists (I count myself as one), have at it and jump up and down at the sight of trains hauling oil for markets in other nations rather than stay here in the good ole' USA.
