The new generation is opting out of cars? To save the environment? Oh really?
Must be isolated to a few coastal cities. Have seen no evidence of that whatsoever - anywhere else. But what is in much evidence virtually everywhere, is that these so-called "millenials" cannot find a decent paying job, let alone actually be willing to work hard enough to keep it for long. They ain't buying the cars because they ain't got any money! -- Not for some misguided sense of nobility! Who conjured up that silly fairy tale anyhow?
And if they did somehow get enough money, they will soon enough be buying that car despite all their noble pretenses. Simply because, except for the extreme few fortunate enough to actually find housing, near where they managed to find a job; they will soon enough face the reality that regularly commuting to work on a bike is NOT at all practical - and never will be.
And a few questions to add to George's:
Are those who oppose oil trains, willing to park their cars right now. Are those preventing oil exploration in this country still willing to drink up oil drilled elsewhere (what about the environment there?). Are those opposed to coal and nuclear and hydro-power, and Canadian gas pipelines, actually willing to turn off the electricity to their homes, or will they continue their hypocritical opposition while they continue to consume. Are those wanting to tear down every irrigation damn that has ever been built, willing to give up food, because all the water went directly out to sea, rather than nourish our crops on the way (it gets to the sea eventually anyway).
The answer to these are as obvious as the nose on Charles de Gaulle's face! If they really believed all their doomsday rhetoric, of course they would immediately give it all up. But just as obvious after all the protests of the past two years, is that they will not. They will be the very last to give anything up, as "entitled" as they seem to think they are! It's damn hard to take these people seriously!
But I guess we had better take them seriously - as some stupid measure signed into law in the late seventies, gives federal money to every self appointed environmental vigilante group that pops up, and grants a special waiver in the courts to file suit without the customarily required legal standing. Nobody else gets that!
Go figure - Who passed that Machiavellian law anyhow?
