After reading the article, I found these Modesto Bee reader comments interesting:

"Talk about short sighted planning. The state NOW pays 90 million in support of the trains, but how long do you think that will last once someone else is on the hook to the feds for the trains?

Amtrak has almost always lost money, just like the post office. Why our local people think they can turn it around - its just arrogance and the hope that they will gets federal subsidies in the future.

Counties and cities have no business in providing inter-state transportation - period.

Learn to run your cities and counties before you start trying to get into new areas."

And...

"If you guys could figure out a way to get trains to run on this line to go all the way into Southern California you would improve ridership. The way it is now you have to get off in Bakersfield and take the bus. People don't like doing that. You can go all the way on the train of you take the costal route, but it's like a 18 hour trip from Modesto to Los Angeles if you go that way."

But to me, the most glaring aspect of this article was two-fold: No mention by the politicians about input or inclusion from the host railroads, and the overall politician-inspired theme that suggests the San Joaquins are not serving the public properly, and the politicos could do a better job. Typical narcisistic attiude by ignorant public trough dickwads.
