CHP did make an accident report. The officer stopped by Saturday morning to confirm that a hazmat team was at work cleaning up spilled diesel fuel. He said the accident report would be available Monday morning.
The truck ran away going down a paved road. According to PLA members on the scene, the two men in the cab rode all the way down and got out through the smashed windshield when everything stopped.
The private road is about 20 feet higher than the grade where the shop building was located. A barrier composed of two concrete lane dividers with dirt between and behind them was supposed to stop the truck. The truck ran over the barrier and came down on top if the metal shop building. Destroying the building absorbed all the energey in the runaway truck. It stopped about two feet short of hitting the crane. Fuel from ruptered tanks caught fire and flowed under the crane.
A quick visual inspection of the crane did not reveal major damage. All the hoses and a canvas wire loom with the crane truck motor did not show any fire damage other than a lot of soot from fuel burning under the crane. Some very expensive tires were destroyed. I did not look under the separate crane engine area. It needs to be jacked up and inspected. A number of hydraulic and pneumatic lines run under that location.
At the end of the day Saturday, the hazmat crew had finished cleaning up. A truckload of new road gravel had been spread where the hazmat crew had removed old gravel. The museum chain link fence had been repaired. The building where I was painting replacement car sash next to the damaged building was not affected so the sash got more work.
None of this affects future train operation. Every thing should go as advertised. I hope this answers any questions so we can let this subject rest.
