Does the state need any more than the segment south of Lamy (Santa Fe connection)? Was there any realistic prospect of RRunner service any farther (say, Las Vegas)? Sounds to me like the state (actually considering the effect on its taxpayers?) took a look at the cost of maintaining the non-RRunner line as any more than a freight spur (coal mines up there still operating?) and decided to cut its losses. Leaving BNSF as the visible bad guy. Amtrak as the only through service will have to relocate, and there'll be another trail opportunity coming soon.

Any parallel to the Coast?
