X2000

Though it was pushed or pulled by diesels on some demonstration runs in the
U.S., the X2000 is an electric train. It would not have worked (wihtout
adding new motive power) in the PNW -- because the lines are not electrified.
I did ride the X2000 on the NEC from Washington to Baltimore, when it was
making demonstration runs. The ride was reasonably good, from what I
remember -- from long ago.
It ran cab car first, and an Amtrak official said he would have allowed me to
ride in the cab, but that they did not have any spare safety glasses, required
for being in the cab. That was one of several incentives for investing in
presciption safety glasses, which I've had ever since, and which have come in
handy several times since.
In fact, I now usually wear the safety glasses when I'm around railroads, whether
or not they are required. In one case, I was riding in the vestibule of an
Operation Lifesaver train, with open dutch doors. A very large beetle hit the
wall (at a good speed) inches from my head. I was glad I was wearing the
safety glasses, as that beetle could have done some damage.
(Probably more than you wanted to know.)
For what it's worth, on the X2000, the cab control car tilted, but the electric
engine did not.
