Sandpoint, Idaho: There Goes the Neighborhood

Today's Coeur d'Alene Press reports the Idaho Transportation Dept. has agreed to acquire property from BNSF for the long-anticipated Sand Creek Bypass in Sandpoint, ID. If built as currently designed, this will realign U.S. 95 out of the downtown surface streets and onto a new elevated corridor right alongside BNSF's roughly north-south alignment of track between Sandpoint depot and Sandpoint Junction. Bad enough that this once-tranquil ex-NP brick depot had its view of Lake Pend Oreille obliterated by new condo and resort complexes. Now it looks like the opposite side of the depot and its view of the surrounding mountains will be blocked by a small freeway. Said bypass will rejoin existing U.S. 95 and Highway 200 directly north of Sandpoint Junction, probably ruining the view we currently enjoy of BNSF and MRL trains merging together at the start of the Funnel with mountains for a backdrop. Note to Steve Patterson: dinner on the back deck of the Trinity restaurant will never be the same!
