The Modoc line primarily provided SP with a short route for traffic between Oregon and the UP and DRGW at Ogden. It was basically a bridge route without much local traffic between Alturas and Wendel (and the traffic from Susanville was about to go away). Following acquisition of the SP by the UP, the long haul traffic could go east on the UP via the OSL, so the need for the Modoc basically went away. Moreover the long east traffic from Oregon (basically lumber) had diminished to the point where even the then independent SP closed the line for a time back in the late 80's or early 90's, I can't remember the exact dates.
