Outlived its usefulness as a shortcut. Prior to 1970, as many as 6 trains went east split between the UP and DRGW, but there was always a crew inblance on the empties coming west of Wendel so lots of deadheading. Helpers needed to go west and east of Alturas. After 1970, SP ran all its long east lumber traffic on the PSSE trains via El Paso and Corscicana, thus earning more money in the haul rather than via Ogden

Anschutz tried to make something of it in 1989, but the customer base wasn't there
