The SooLine /Cp Main (Calgary Estevan / Valley City,ND /Glenwood,MN / Shorham/Minneapolis) crosses the BNSF in Minot. The crude in the Quebec incident originated on CP at Van Hook, New Town,ND 60 miles southwest of Minot.
Northwest Airlines/Delta bought a refinery in Philadelphia which I understand is receiving Bakken,ND crude by rail from BNSF. I've seen a number of NS units on BNSF oil trains through Staples,MN in recent months.
The Washy, SI Idaho oil cars may be tar sand crude from Alberta which is much heavier out of the processing plant. Some is thick, like asphalt for highway pavement, and must be heated to pump out of tankers. Some is cut back/mixed with up to 30% dilulent so it can be pumped at ambient temperature.
I understand the CP spill last fall near Parkers Prairie,MN (50 miles north of Glenwood towards Winnepeg} was tar sand crude since the cars had to be heated to be emptied and the small amount that leaked did not soak in to the ground.
