More than half of the grain trains, and much of the other traffic that is southbound, originates in the U.S., and moves down the S.I. through Spokane and terminates in the U.S.
This has been the case for some time. Much of this traffic would be riding the Milwaukee
Road west were it still in place (in fact, years ago, much of it traveled in Milwaukee Road
lettered hoppers, gons and boxcars). In recent years, there has been some traffic following
the reverse path including a great deal of steel. Sooo, it is quite possible that the oil and oil related traffic could start and end in the U.S., or it could be coming from the Tar
Sands projects.
