The tunnel motor was an ingenious solution to the problems SP encountered on Donner Pass with tunnels and Snow sheds. The first one was the cab forward . Other railroads ignored the brilliance and simplicity of that solution. With the diesel era version, other railroads took notice and the tunnel motor was not just an SP oddity . That they still run on short lines is testament to their strength and versatility . Now the trick is parts and keeping the EPA from condemning them.
