One of the GP7's used by Great Western when they operated the Lakeview line survives today. Ex GW 1617, exx BN 1617, exxx CB&Q 261. Built Dec 1953, builder # 118977. I have heard that it is one of only two ex "Q" GP7's in existence today.
1617 is used today by Eastern Washington Gateway RR on the former BN (ex NP) "CW" branch between Cheney WA and Coulee City WA and on the Geiger Spur (ex GN) to Airway Heights WA. A tough little unit, it earns it's keep! It also gets its share of running on the "CW" main with big grain trains, helping its newer 6-axle EMD brethren.
An extremely sharp curve at the industry end of the Geiger Spur keeps 1617 on the roster. In the picture below, notice the truck swing on the 1617!
1617 Ran for many years in faded Great Western red (turned pink)paint. Notice the "NCO Division" lettering and the faded "Fast Freight" lettering on the frame under the cab. I wonder how Great Western defined "Fast Freight"?
Now painted black & yellow in a quasi NP style
