I find it strange that 0-6-0's would be used for local switching as the grade is about 1% thru town....There was a mill just south of Mt. Shasta that did a considerable amount of shipping and it would seem that heavier power would be needed...Apparently McCloud must have been bringing a considerable amount of tonnage over to the SP and the yard is pretty good sized....SP ran a Black Butte Turn out of Dunsmuir and this train was always good sized and double headed to black Butte and the helper returned while the road engine did all the work, usually a pair of 2-10-2's.
You can still see where the mill south of Mt.shasta use to be...With all the local traffic and the traffic coming in off the line to Weed north made Dunsmuir a busy place. Also, there use to be a helper stationed north of Weed as it was a pretty good climb to the Black Butte connection...Great notes..
