So as many may remember, in Feb 1996 a very nasty head on collision on CSX at Georgetown Jct (SilverSpring) took 11 lives when a MARC push pull slammed into Amtrak F 40s. The root cause was apparently failure to obey a yellow signal. If CSX had deployed cab signals, the engineer would have had the yellow staring him in the face and likely not been killed. FRA's response was to order new "bulking up" of cab cars in such service. While NO technology can prevent the stupidity at Chatsworth, a cab signal system such as CTA uses wherein the engineer must obey speed commands or a penalty brake application occurs would have saved those lives.
We are not deploying proven safety systems; instead we buy more steel and waste more fuel moving it. Pennywise pound foolish IMHO.
