For a long time now, British Railways have been happily mixing HSTs and freight trains (with US built locos) without dire results. Most other non loco hauled trainsets also share the rails. There are few dedicated tracks in the UK unlike other countries so sharing has to be.
Various manufacturers have chosen ways other than heft and steel to protect life and limb and while there have been fatalities, they could have been a lot worse. In view of the difference between passenger capacity in the US and Europe, its still remarkably safe to ride the train.
With little production of its own, the US is missing out to France, Germany, Japan and now China.
