So is every thing and every one that disagrees with certain assertions, somehow reactive, or reactionary?
The Real reason we do not have the same level of rail passenger service as Europe, is because we did not want it. And since we did not want it, NO OTHER REASON MATTERS anyway. it is just that simple.
You may be too young to remember, but the plain fact is, that whether or not we saw it that way, we elected and re-elected politicians, over and over; that did see railroad travel as archaic and outmoded. And they did their damnedest to put and end to it. Expensive highways by the trillions, and all.
Because the automobile was seen as more convenient, we the people, also abandoned the train in droves, until the economies of scale no longer applied and they became unprofitable. Not even the supposedly pro-rail Nixon did anything about that. Thus Amtrak was created, with a largely unmarketable and thus unprofitable level of service, and there it has stayed.
Europe did not, nor did anyone else abandon their trains. If we had wanted them, we could have had them. And if you want them back, no politician will take that seriously, until enough people abandon the automobile and start using the trains we do have, in droves.
