There were rumors of a cover - up by Santa Fe after this Runaway Wreck in Cajon Pass. The railroad became VERY defensive, blaming the wreck on a person or persons unknown who must have kicked an angle cock closed as he / she jumped on / off the train @ Summit. Santa Fe was so convinced of this that they turned Summit into Stalig 13, complete with fencing, lights, and a full - time security guard on site. Forgotten in all this was the fact that several Mechanical Dept. personnel ( a car inspector & his supervisor ) at Barstow resigned and / or were fired within a day or two after the Runaway.
