I forgot about the FAX service. What helped me on several occasions was the telephone "Hot Line". Back in December 1988 my wife and I celebrated our anniversary in Reno by riding Amtrak. We left our car at my parents house in San Francisco. Our plan was to return to S.F. and stay the night at my folks and leave early to chase SP4449 heading the "Shipper's Special" on the Siskiyou Line between Roseburg and Medford.

On the way back a strong wind storm downed the power on the SP signals between Sacramento and Benicia. Our train had to reduce speed, stop at each dark signal, and then proceed at reduced speed to the next signal. I don't recall how late we were reaching San Francisco. I called the Flimsies "hot Line" to see if the "Shipper's Special" was still a go. The Hot Line said yes, so we immediately drove north, staying at a Motel 6 at Weed for four hours (midnight to 4:00 a.m.) and then drove on to Medford. We got there just as the SP carryall was taking invited guests shippers to Roseburg to ride the train back to Medford. Had it not been for the Hot Line, we might not have chanced the drive. It turned out to be one of my best trips for photos and videos. Getting the latest information is no big deal today.
