I could see a situation with RR equipment similar to that with autos. "Historic" stuff up through the early 1980s (though I can't see that much from the late 1970s-early 1980s is worth keeping) is generally rebuildable and restorable because even if the parts aren't available they're still mechanical and can be made. When computer started appearing as a major part of the control system in the mid-80s, that started to become a problem; computer software and hardware "ages" (in terms of replacement parts) much faster than the mechanical stuff. A failed computer or sensor from even the 1980s can be difficult or impossible to replace, and can't be re-made without access to the original code. That leads to disposal of an otherwise repairable car unless it's of fabulously high value (justifying redevelopment of the electronic and software parts).
With computers becoming a major component in locomotives from the mid-1990s on, the same thing could be happening here. So document the "good old days" today (as many fans are doing) in photos and words and sounds, because unlike those Baldwins much of the modern stuff will probably go to scrap well before its 50th birthday and in mechanically usable shape, because of computer/control system failure or obsolescence.
