The Little Joes were built to operate on 3300 Volts DC, while both The Milwaukee Road Electrified Districts were 3000 Volts DC. Milwaukee Road's Chief Electrical Engineer, Laurence Wylie, decided the Joes could be best utilized on the Rocky Mountain District, which in spite of its' name had a lot of flat level running for the Joes' 70 MPH top speed, as opposed to the GE Boxcab's top speed of 50 MPH. So Wylie beefed up the substations with the ex - NYC Cleveland Union Terminal M-G sets, and re-shimmed the existing M-G sets to put out a higher voltage as well.
