Nor was it projected...perhaps because the "cobbled-together" SDP40F design was just that: cobbled-together...that it would be ill-suited for operation on several major Amtrak routes, where they derailed with alsrming frequency, resulting their lifetimes being cut short to as little as five years.
What did prove true: they were easily converted to freight use and performed well in that role, as proven by Santa Fe after they traded some surplus switchers for Amtrak's last few SDP40Fs.
